The Title IX Watershed
The higher education community is reeling from the April 4, 2011, “Dear Colleague” letter from the U. S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, relating to sexual violence and sexual harassment on campuses. The 19-page document sets out expansive new requirements for training, investigating and administration. A Title IX Coordinator position must be exclusively devoted to this issue.
Many questions remain unanswered. Yet, in the absence of more detailed guidelines, your CUPA-HR colleagues are working with their numerous effected campus constituencies to implement the requirements detailed in the letter. It is times like these that the power of our association and Association can be leveraged to the good of all. I encourage you to be proactive in sharing your plans, programs, questions and solutions through the Community Center blog. Additionaly, a Title IX toolkit is being developed in the Knoweldge Center, thanks to CUPA-HR Chief Learning Officer Dr. Ken Tagawa. We invite your suggestions and contributions.
